Massage TherapyMassage Therapy is soft tissue manipulation of the body. It is one of the oldest recognized forms of healing. It involves a variety of techniques to help prevent, develop, maintain, or rehabilitate physical function or relieve pain. It is a clinically-oriented form of treatment that can help with many health conditions stemming from muscular dysfunction, overuse injuries, and many chronic pain syndromes. Traditional Swedish Massage Therapy usually involves lotions or oils on the skin with a variety of kneading and stroking techniques. It is based on the evidence that William Garner Sutherland discovered in the 1900’s that the bones of the skull are not completely fused. They, in fact, allow for slight, but palpable motion which facilitates the cranial rhythm of the cerebral spinal fluid. If these cranial bones are not moving normally, which could be due to head injury or a membranous restriction, it can impede on the circulation, and membranous function which surround and facilitate the brain and spinal cord. Some of the many things Craniosacral therapy can help with include:
With Craniosacral Therapy, the therapist attempts to normalize the function and mobility of the cranial bones and those of the pelvis. Restoring this relationship has a profound effect on the entire body as all neural innervation stems between the head and sacrum. The therapy itself is very gentle and relaxing, often patients find themselves dozing off during treatments. It is based in anatomy and structure and involves precise palpation. It looks at the entire person as one functioning unit and tries to determine where the cause of pain or dysfunction is in the body. It aims to improve position, mobility and function of the tissues that are most limited. It holds the belief that the body has the ability to heal itself but sometimes needs to be “unblocked” to start the healing process. Stacey Ayres, RMT, Osteopath in training, incorporates aspects of Osteopathy into her practice Nutritional CounsellingNutritional Counselling is based on assessment and recommendations of the individual person’s needs.
